6. El Presidio de Santa Bárbara State Historic Park
When you visit El Presidio de Santa Bárbara State Historic Park, you’re stepping into a piece of history. This 5.5-acre park is home to the last Spanish fortress, or presidio, founded in Alta (upper) California. It dates back to 1782, with two of the original fort adobe buildings still standing.
Walking around the grounds, you’ll find yourself snapping pictures of the historic space. The park is small, but it packs a lot of history. If you’re a history buff, this is a must-see spot in Santa Barbara.
- Plan a trip to see El Presidio de Santa Bárbara State Historic Park.
- Explore the original adobe buildings.
- Learn about the Spanish settlers and their impact on the region.
While the buildings are beautiful, it’s important to remember the somber reality of why they’re in Santa Barbara. The missions were created to assimilate natives to colonial ways of life, which resulted in a loss of native traditions and many deaths.
If you have more time and want to dive deeper into history, consider visiting the nearby Old Mission Santa Barbara. It’s another significant historical site that offers self-guided tours through its beautiful grounds and chapel.

Arroyo Burro Beach, also known as Hendry’s Beach, is a must-visit spot in Santa Barbara. This beach is lined by scenic coastal bluffs and is a great place to jump in the water, go on a walk, or just lay out and catch some rays. It’s a perfect spot for a relaxing day by the ocean.
Go on a Hike
There are plenty of beautiful trails in the area, so you’ll want to add a hike to your Santa Barbara weekend itinerary. I recommend two different options, depending on how difficult and how long of a hike you’re looking for:
- Arroyo Burro Beach Loop (1.3 Miles, Easy): This trail is really more of a walk than a true hike – there is very little elevation gain, and the trail is wide and easy to navigate. That said, it’s well worth the visit, as it sits on a bluff and offers gorgeous views of the coastline. It’s also conveniently located right next to the beach. For parking, you can street park on Medcliff Road or the surrounding streets.
- Inspiration Point Trail (3.4 Miles, Moderate): For those looking for a bit more of a challenge, this is one of the best trails in the area. The out-and-back trail takes you out to a viewpoint, where you’ll get stunning views of the ocean and the mountainous landscape. There isn’t a parking lot here, so you’ll need to street park on Tunnel Road. It’s a popular spot, so you might have to park a bit down the road and walk up to the trailhead.
Visit Arroyo Burro Beach
Next up, make your way over to Arroyo Burro Beach. It’s about a 5-minute drive from the Arroyo Burro Beach Loop, and a 20-minute drive from the Inspiration Point trailhead. This beach is lined by scenic coastal bluffs and is a great place to jump in the water, go on a walk, or just lay out and catch some rays.
Grab Lunch & Coffee
After spending some time at Hendry’s Beach, make your way back into town for lunch. Here are two options to consider:
- Cajé Coffee (Multiple Locations): Cajé is a coffee shop that also offers simple breakfast items, such as bagels and avocado toast. If the weather is nice, I recommend going to the location at 1316 State Street, where they have a really beautiful outdoor patio.
- Jeannine’s Restaurant & Bakery (Multiple Locations): If you want more of a sit-down, table service type of experience, head over to Jeannine’s. This popular restaurant cooks up classic breakfast dishes, including benedicts, pancakes, waffles, and more. If you happen to be taking the train for your day trip, there is a location within walking distance of the Santa Barbara train station.
